Report Reveals the Scope of Substance Use and Mental Illness Affecting the Nation

The 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health Report shows that 24.6 million Americans age 12 or older were current (past-month) illicit drug users—9.4 percent of this age group. Marijuana was by far the most commonly used illicit drug with approximately 19.8 million current users age 12 or older.

Two SAMHSA reports show that while many employers have policies and programs addressing substance use disorders, many of the 10.8 million full-time workers with these problems may not be receiving help in the workplace.

Underage Binge Alcohol Use Rates Vary Extensively Across Regions in the United States

New SAMHSA report shows that the levels of binge drinking in substate regions ranged from a low of 9.2 percent in Shelby County, Tennessee, to a high of 46.3 percent in the District of Columbia's Ward 2 (located in the west-central section of the city).
